From the big city shows to the small, heartfelt displays of community and togetherness, there is something extra special to be found in the lights that will help guide us out of this most challenging year.
1. Montrose, Angus
The town got an upgrade to its Christmas lights this year and is dazzling with this veil of sparkle over the town's Ballhouse after the Santa Claus in Montrose charity raised money for the illuminations. Photo: Ken Patterson
2. Castlebay, Isle of Barra
Crochet and knitted squares have been sent from around the world from both the island diaspora and those with fond memories of a trip to Barra. The squares are stitched together to make this cosy tree and a second one is being made this year, such has been the response. Photo: Contributed
3. Ullapool, Ross and Cromarty
It has been a really difficult year for this small remote town reliant on visitors with the creel tree bringing some joy at the tail end of 2020, with little mini versions now springing up outside people's houses. Photo: Ullapool Fire and Light
4. Edinburgh
Edinburgh always wears a fine Christmas crown and, although events are well scaled back this year, this light trail at the Royal Botanic Gardens leaves visitors with a lovely festive glow. Photo: Photo Phil Wilkinson
