Big rise in UK car production

Car production increased by 5.8 per cent last month, compared with September last year, signalling a continued improvement in the motor industry.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said yesterday that 126,548 cars were built, bringing the total this year to 937,891, a 35 per cent increase on last year.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "UK vehicle production was up 6.6 per cent in September, with rises across the car, commercial vehicle and engine sectors. In yesterday's spending review, government outlined some tough decisions, but also committed to a strong growth agenda."
