Beware... Hurricane Bawbag

The World Meteorological Organisation maintains six alphabetical lists, used in rotation, to bestow upon Atlantic hurricanes names such as Irene or Rita, but it needed only one Scot’s wit on Twitter to christen our storm “Hurricane Bawbag”.

Few outside Scotland would get the connection between 165mph winds and a small piece of wrinkled skin, but the colloquial term for an irritable nuisance makes it apt. Scotland tweeted and the world laughed.

One post read: “Hurricane Bawbag Update: A plant pot has fallen over in Airdrie. An eye witness retold the horror: ‘It pure went sideways’.”
