A Scots angler bit off more than he could chew when an alligator snapped its jaws around his tackle.

Stephen McMillan, 36, was on a fishing trip on holiday in the US and hoping to catch some bass with an imitation bait that looked like a rubber fish.

But instead of a quiet afternoon on the water, he was left battling with a 6ft alligator which had followed him before clinging onto his bait.

Mr McMillan, a shopkeeper, fought the beast for 15 minutes and reeled it in while it spun around, hissed and showed off its razor-sharp teeth.

He said his wife would never have believed the terrifying incident which happened on a lake near Kissimmee, near Orlando, Florida.
