The Prime Minister's wife, Samantha, had given birth to baby Florence a few days earlier and he never got to see his fourth grandchild.

Yesterday Florence was carried by Mr Cameron, accompanied by his wife, to the funeral at St Barnabas Church in Peasemore, Berkshire.

The Prime Minister's attendance at the private ceremony meant he had to miss Pope Benedict XVI's address to MPs in Parliament's Westminster Hall. Ian Cameron died on Wednesday last week after suffering a stroke while on holiday with his wife, Mary, near the French Mediterranean port of Toulon.

The Prime Minister flew to France after hearing he had fallen ill and was able to see him before he died.
