Glasgow council pushes for £100 parking fines

PARKING fines in Glasgow are set to rise to £100 if the Scottish Government approves plans put forward by the council.

A submission by councillors says that current fines are too low and no longer act as a deterrent.

The government is consulting on a plan to let councils increase the present level of fines by up to two-thirds, to either 80 or 100. Glasgow councillors now say they would like to charge the maximum possible, though the fine is not about raising cash.

Robert Booth, director of land services, said: "We haven't increased fines for six years. It's something that has to be increased as the deterrent is not what it used to be."

Councillor Matthew Kerr, who suggested the rise, said it was not about raising money. He said: "Ideally we would like to lose money on this as it means more people are complying."

SNP councillors wanted the maximum to be 80 but were voted down on the council's executive committee.
