Lothians pair are in the running for sport award

TWO students from the Lothians are in the running for a national award that recognises people who have been inspired by sport.

Newbattle High School pupil Conor Fitzpatrick and Lasswade High's Kyle Davidson have been nominated by their teachers for the Sky Sports Living For Sport student of the year award.

The awards - run in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust - celebrate the way schools have used the Sky Sports scheme to introduce pupils to sport, which has then helped to inspire young people to reach their potential.

Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter and awards' ambassador Darren Campbell will lead the judging panel to help decide the 12 regional finalists, with the shortlist for the national award to be revealed next month.

Conor, 14, was nominated after being introduced to sport helped to turn him from an "ambivalent" pupil who was often absent and struggled with confidence to a more positive and determined pupil, now heavily involved in basketball.

Kyle, who has attention deficit disorder, also became much more communicative after taking part in the scheme.
