Farm dangers

I write in regards to Bill Howatson's article, "Rise in farm deaths shows HSE is right to drive home message" (your report, 12 July).

As the summer harvest starts soon, it is essential for farm operators to make use of the guidance available to them to protect themselves and their workers. Sadly, many of these deaths are the result of poor safety preparation and operating systems. It is crucial that farmers conduct proper and documented risk assessments for each human role and that these are communicated to all staff, with translations for foreign workers.

Farm operators should consider implementing a tailored health and safety programme for their farm. The Health and Safety Executive has a good and informative internet site to assist with this, with templates and guidance notes.

Agriculture will always contain an element of danger but every opportunity should be taken to limit the risks and protect human life.
