Letter: Unjust attack

Derek Browning's pompous and illiberal diatribe (Letters, 12 August) offers no moral, spiritual, theological or philosophical justification for his point of view. (Recent St Andrews University appointees) Tom Wright and Roger Scruton do offer academic context and perspective for their respective opinions.

Derek Browning rejects nearly 2,000 years of Christian history and core teaching. He negates the views of the large majority of our theistically inclined contemporary world population, who themselves represent about 80 per cent of humanity.

His train of thought, by implication, takes the name of Jesus Christ for granted and that puts his status as a church minister in question.

Congratulations to the University of St Andrews on securing the services of two of the outstanding thinkers in their fields: Dr Tom Wright in theology and Roger Scruton in philosophy.

It is sinister and concerning that so many people feel these men should be excluded from academic posts because they dare question the standard (in the media anyway) view of homosexuality.

How long will it be before we see job adverts ending with "orthodox Christians need not apply"?
