Public notice plans ditched

EDINBURGH Central Labour MSP Sarah Boyack today welcomed the Scottish Government's decision to abandon controversial plans to remove council notices from local papers.

Ministers had planned to allow local authorities to put public notices, such as planning applications and road closures, online to save money.

Opposition parties united in January to vote against the plan. Now finance secretary John Swinney has conceded political opposition to the plan is too great.

Ms Boyack said: "These plans would have disadvantaged those households which don't have internet access, effectively removing them from this aspect of the democratic process. I am delighted that the SNP have seen sense."
