UK news: Moat policeman put up for courage award

The policeman blinded by killer Raoul Moat has been nominated to be honoured for his courage with a Pride of Britain award.

Pc David Rathband lost the sight in both eyes when he was shot in the face by the on-the-run gunman as he sat in his patrol car at an A1 roundabout in Newcastle four months ago.

Kelly files to be released

Files relating to the death of weapons inspector David Kelly are to be released today.

Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke will publish medical reports on how Dr Kelly died, according to national reports.

Mr Clarke has ruled that, in the interests of transparency, the files should be made available for public scrutiny.

Councils given road salt advice by government

Councils should look to increase their stocks of road salt to combat severe winter weather, a Whitehall-commissioned review said today.

The current benchmark for local highway authorities is enough salt for four gritter runs a day for six days.

Led by RAC Foundation chairman David Quarmby, the review team made 11 recommendations today to add to the 17 made in an interim report in July 2010.

Sir Norman service held

Comedy legend Sir Norman Wisdom will be laid to rest at a funeral service today.

Hundreds of people are expected to line the streets of Douglas on the Isle of Man, where the cortege will pass along the promenade.

Sir Norman's family, friends, celebrities and the general public will pay their respects to the star at St George's Church in the town.

Suffolk: Two men died after a brick wall collapsed at a building site in a village.

The wall was part of a barn undergoing conversion in Worlingworth, according to firefighters. Both men were declared dead at the scene.

Manchester: Talks over Wayne Rooney's future at Manchester United will continue today in the aftermath of a protest at his home.

Officers were called to his 4.5 million mansion in the village of Prestbury, Cheshire, at 8.30pm last night after a mob of up to 30 people descended on the property.
