Video shows captive alive but nervous

A VIDEO of an Italian aid worker who was kidnapped nearly two weeks ago in Kabul was broadcast yesterday on an Afghan television station.

Clementina Cantoni, 32, a worker for CARE International, was shown sitting nervously with two masked men flanking her pointing assault rifles at her head.

Responding to prompts from a man who was not shown on the video, Ms Cantoni spoke quietly as she identified herself and named her father, mother and an uncle.

The tape - which was broadcast by independent Tolo TV - then zoomed in on the face of the Italian, who was wrapped in a brown rug and wore a blue scarf over her head.

The Italian foreign ministry welcomed the video as evidence that Ms Cantoni was alive and in good health, and said: "Contacts continue."
