Champions West Lothian falter at quarter-finals

BOWLS: Defending champions West Lothian disappointingly crashed out of the Scottish Cities & Counties Championship in the first of the knock-out stages in yesterday's quarter-final clash against Lanarkshire South.

Favourites to retain the title, both teams finished with three winning rinks apiece, but the winning margin on the rinks skipped by Robert Grant, Jim Meikle and David Gardner was enough to carry the result 119-107. Lanarkshire South, who last won the title in 2008, will face Renfrewshire West in next week's semi-finals. Despite winning on only two of their six rinks they did enough to carry the result 133-125 against a determined Highland challenge at Dunblane.

In the other half of the draw, Ayrshire will meet Midlothian, having finished strongly to win 112-91 against North Section winners Angus. Midlothian got the better of South Section winners Dumfries at Kilmarnock North West to secure their semi-final berth with a 120-93 victory.
