Hockey: McIntyre's brace gives Highland Jaguars bite

Glynhill Kelburne's Gordon McIntyre will have done his Great Britain prospects no harm at all with his double strike for Scottish side Highland Jaguars as they clawed their way to a 2-1 win over Welsh side Celtic Panthers in the opening game of the GB Super League at Cardiff.

The Scots dominated the early proceedings on Saturday with Michael Bremner and Willie Marshall coming close before McIntrye opened the scoring in 12 minutes with a fierce low drive. The Jaguars continued to dominate but the Welsh equalised against the run of play just before the interval, a quick free hit caught the Jaguars' defence napping, keeper Phil Carr saved the original shot but failed to keep out the rebound.

Early in the second half McIntyre made it 2-1 with another low drive after a penetrating run down the right by Gavin Byers.

Jaguars did well to glean a 2-2 draw with a powerful English Saxon Tigers side in their second outing yesterday, all the goals coming in the last ten minutes. The Tigers dominated most of the goalless first half with Inverleith keeper Barnaby Barbour having to look lively on several occasions.

With the Tigers still in control, the Scots stole the lead in 60 minutes. the English failed to clear the danger and Gareth Davies pounced on the loose ball to lashed it into the net. The Tigers' equaliser came courtesy of Marshall, his attempted clearance simply gave away possession and the English took full advantage to level. The Jaguars looked to have the points sewn up when Fraser Hirst dispossessed an English defender, the ball moved on to Bremner and his square pass was rolled home by Steven Percy. But with two minutes remaining the Tigers drew level again with a drive past Barbour.

Scotland's other side, under the guise of Caledonian Cougars, failed to impress in their only match with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of English side Pennine Pumas.

In the women's competition the Cougars beat Welsh side Celtic Panthers by a single goal from Nikki Kidd to take the three points from their opening encounter. In yesterday's game against English side Pennine Pumas, the Cougars dominated most of the contest but only came away with a 1-1 draw.

On the domestic scene, CALA Edinburgh, already promoted, finished off their men's Subway national league division two campaign with a 5-2 win over city rivals Watsonians.
