Italy 20-50 Australia: Wallabies bounce back

Tommaso Allan, who earlier this year decided his international future lay with Italy rather than Scotland, came off the bench to score a try in the dying minutes against Australia.

The Perpignan utility back – he came on to replace stand-off Alberto Di Bernardo – represented Scotland at under-17, 18 and 20 levels. He was eligible for both Scotland and Italy but his appearance in Turin means he is now lost to Murrayfield.

The Wallabies bounced back from their England defeat to record a 50-20 victory at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin, putting in a solid performance to see off the Italians, who began strongly and took the lead through Luke McLean before Australia struck back with a brace of tries from Nick Cummins and one apiece from Ben Mowen, Tevita Kuridrani, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Joe Tomane and Israel Folau.

Italy took the lead after just four minutes as Alberto Di Bernardo kicked over a penalty, then Australian-born full-back McLean crossed over for the opening try to make it 8-0. Di Bernardo made no mistake with his conversion.

Australia came back with a try of their own 15 minutes in. Quade Cooper set up captain Mowen, who beat Sergio Parisse and crashed over for a fine try. Cooper was successful with a conversion.

Cummins made a break for it, offloading the ball to Kuridrani and the Brumbies outside-centre crossed over for their second try – with Cooper again on target.

Will Genia then set up Cummins before the Italian defence could get into position, Italy trailing 19-10 after the first half.

The Wallabies extended their lead as Cooper collected the ball and found Cummings with an excellent pass for their fourth try. Ashley-Cooper then took Cooper’s pass to fire his side further ahead.

Lorenzo Cittadini crossed to reduce the deficit but Christian Lealiifano added a penalty and replacement Tomane crossed then Folau claimed a try of his own after collecting Tomane’s pass. Lealiifano was on target with both goals.

The home side won the ball and ran hard as Allan saw off Saia Fainga’a to record a close-range try.
