Volleyball: Mel Coutts claims beach title

MEL COUTTS, Scotland's indoor volleyball player of the year teamed up with Olympian Mo Glover to win the Portobello Open beach tournament.

Coutts won the event last year with Eilidh Smith but partnered England's Glover to a 2-0 final win over Smith and Claire Penny.

Capital pair Barry McGuigan and Graham Riddle won the men's event with a 2-0 final victory over James Jensen and Colin Paterson.

Back indoors, Great Britain men's team, featuring former City of Edinburgh player Mark McGivern, had another outstanding result to keep their hopes alive of reaching the Final Four of the European League.

The British team, who had beaten 2008 champions Slovakia in straight sets the previous weekend in Sheffield, stunned Spain 25-22, 26-24, 25-22 in Salamanca.

It was the GB team's first significant victory away from home and keeps them in second position in the pool ahead of this weekend's double-header with leaders Romania in Crawley.

Should Harry Brokking's side manage a double victory, they would be in pole position to qualify for the Final Four for the first time.
